According to our textbook, desktop publishing (DTP) software has given computer-users the ability to create professional looking material for both print and electronic pages. Materials can be created that incorporate text, graphics, digital pictures, stylized headlines, and professionally prepared design elements. The ease of this type of software allows those that are not computer experts to still create and manipulate varies types of documents that are professional and useful.
This type of academic software is important in education because it allows both the teacher and student to create varies types of documents for varies needs. With ease a teacher or student can create worksheets/tests with graphics or digital pictures, posters, signs, flyers, brochures, newsletters, certificates, flash cards, letters for parents, permission slips for field trips, and banners. Educators can now use desktop publishing software to create web pages with the web site authoring component that can easily be converted to the World Wide Web, allowing a professional looking web site layout for teachers to create and upload onto the Web. This component allows parents and students to view classroom activities and assignments on the Web from anywhere in the world.
As a future school librarian, I plan to utilize desktop publishing software to create library newsletters, certificates, brochures, signs and flyers to spread the word of what is going on in my library. I would also like to utilize the web site authoring component to create an attractive web site layout for my library to share our library news with the world.

Authoring Systems
According to our textbook, Authoring Systems include programs that create computer-based customized multimedia lessons and those that create lessons for presentation online. These programs create and present multimedia through links and jumps so that students can move through the learning experience in their own way. Teachers may need to create their own instructional software to meet the needs of their particular grade level or topic area, so learning how to use and incorporate authoring systems can be very useful in education.
HyperStudio is one of the more widely used programs for Windows computers. This type of authoring software is relatively easy for both students and teachers to use. This program creates a series of linked cards that may contain text, audio, graphics, animation and/or video. You can learn more about HyperStudio from the “official” home page at http://www.mackiev.com/hyperstudio/index.html.
The most popular software at this time for producing hypermedia lessons is PowerPoint. PowerPoint software contains features that can include multimedia elements on every slide, allowing it to be used as an authoring system. You can find out more about PowerPoint at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/default.aspx.
As a future school librarian, I feel that I will use authoring systems to create lessons and presentations for my students and staff. I will use this type of academic software to create WebQuests and book trailers for my patrons. Due to the capabilities of Web 2.0, many people are creating and sharing WebQuests and book trailers for others to use. A great place to begin searching for WebQuests is http://www.webquest.org/index.php. If you are interested in book trailers, Naomi Bates has a great blog, YA books and More, at http://www.naomibates.blogspot.com/, where she posts book trailers.
